In reply, Rohit Sharma made 56, while Rahul (24) and Pandey (28) did their best, but an out of form Vijay Shankar led to both of them getting out trying to up the run rate. Finally, it came down to 34 runs in last two overs with new man Dinesh Karthik on the strike with Rubel Hossain ready to bowl. What happened next has been etched in the history of T20I cricket in golden letters.
Dinesh Karthik slammed the first three balls for a six, four and a six again, took a double and then hit the last ball for a four again to make 22 runs in that important penultimate over to bring India back into the game. Now 12 runs were needed in 6 balls of the last over bowled by Soumya Sarkar.
Sarkar bowled brilliantly well leaving India to get 10 runs off 4 balls and then Shankar hit a four off the 4th ball and then got out on the fifth ball. India needed five runs on the last ball, but Karthik was on strike. Soumya bowled the ball full and wide, Karthik hit it over the cover boundary clean for a six, taking India to an impossible-looking win and leaving Bangladesh distraught and Sri Lankan fans rejoiced as well, with India becoming champions.
