Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has advised India captain Rohit Sharma to prioritize his fitness ahead of major tournaments.

Following the bilateral series against the West Indies and with the T20 World Cup in Australia just a few months away, Rohit will captain the Indian team at the Asia Cup 2022 later this month.

During the third T20I of the ongoing West Indies tour on Tuesday (August 2), Rohit walked out injured after sustaining a back spasm in the second over of India's innings.  After a long conversation with the team physio, he ultimately made the decision to retire hurt.

Kaneria shared a video on his YouTube channel regarding the game and suggested that Rohit should be rested for the upcoming T20Is of the Caribbean tour. He supported Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, and Shreyas Iyer as potential captains in Sharma’s absence.

"When Rohit Sharma pulled the delivery for a boundary and the way he reacted, as a player, I knew he was in a lot of pain. He should prioritize his fitness and even if it means he needs to rest for the next two games, then it doesn't matter. India need Rohit Sharma for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. So even if he rests, there are ample match-winners and captaincy options like Shreyas, Sanju Samson, or even Rishabh Pant," the former Pakistan cricketer said.

Kaneria also praised Suryakumar Yadav for his match-winning performance in the third T20I.

"We all know what an incredibly classical player Suryakumar Yadav is. But in modern-day cricket, I don't think there's anyone who plays the flick shot as well as him. The way he uses his wrists over the top in the flick, absolutely magnificent," he added.

Suryakumar smashed 76 off 44 balls to help his team chase down the 165-run target with an over and 7 wickets to spare. For this knock, he received the Player of the Match award.

He also ascended to the Number 2 position in the ICC T20I batting rankings as a result of this knock, with Pakistan’s Babar Azam holding the top spot.

The remaining two T20Is will be played on Saturday (August 06) and Sunday (August 07) in Florida.
