India opener Rohit Sharma on Saturday (September 4) proved why he is rated among the finest batsmen of the modern era.
The right-hander slammed a classy century to put the visitors in the driver’s seat in the ongoing fourth Test against England at the Oval.
Team India were trailing by 99 runs going into their second innings and needed someone to get a big score. Rohit shared an 83-run opening stand with KL Rahul (46) to stamp his authority in the game.
After Rahul’s dismissal, Cheteshwar Pujara joined Rohit in the middle and the duo put the tourists in a strong position with their unbroken 116-run partnership till the Tea break on Day 3.
In the process, Rohit notched up his 8th Test hundred and his first on English soil in the longest format. He achieved the milestone with a gigantic six off Moeen Ali in the 64th over of India’s innings.
As soon as he reached the landmark, the Indian balcony at the Oval was seen cheering for him. India skipper Virat Kohli was also delighted by Rohit’s performance as cameras spotted him clapping and throwing his fist with joy.
