England team's Ashes 2021-22 debacle raised grave concerns about the state of cricket in the country. Questions were raised about the existing structure of county cricket, the state of domestic pitches, the training and skill levels of players, and the efficiency and capabilities of the team management.

In the aftermath that followed, Graham Thorpe, assistant coach, was one of the three people axed from the English setup, the other two being head coach Chris Silverwood and director of men's cricket Ashley Giles.

Thorpe, who has played 100 Tests for England between 1993 and 2005, is highly respected in the cricket community across the world and hence, it came as no surprise when he was appointed the new head coach of the Afghanistan national team replacing Lance Klusener, who stepped down in November after a two-year stint with the team.

The ACB had launched the recruitment process for hiring a new head coach, through which Graham Thorpe was selected as the best available nominee for the position. He will step up into the role of head coach ahead of the upcoming international events of Afghanistan. Former Australia batter Stuart Law had been in charge of the national set-up in an interim capacity," the Afghanistan Cricket Board said in a press release.

The other names in contention included former Pakistan players Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Mahmood.
