WI v IND 2023: Wanted Ishan Kishan to get off the mark in Test cricket before declaring, says Rohit Sharma after Dominica Test win

Kishan took 20 balls to open his account with the bat in Test cricket.

Ishan Kishan scored 1* off 20 balls on his debut Test innings | TwitterTeam India on Friday (July 14) registered a crushing victory by an innings and 141 runs over West Indies in the Dominica Test to take an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

In reply to West Indies’ total of 150, the visitors piled up 421/5 (declared) in their first innings on the back of hundreds from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and skipper Rohit Sharma (103) and a half-century from Virat Kohli (76).

In the second innings, the hosts once again faltered with the bat, getting bowled out for a paltry 130 to lose the match inside three days.

Speaking after the game, India skipper Rohit Sharma said that he wanted wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan to open his account with the willow in Test cricket before declaring the innings on Day 3.

On his debut Test innings, Kishan scored 1* off 20 balls before Rohit signalled the declaration.

“I was just letting them know we have an over or so before declaring. I wanted Ishan to get off the mark because he had played 20 balls without getting off the mark. Wanted him to get his first runs in Test cricket and then we would declare. I could see that he was always eager to bat, it could be frustrating for them,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation ceremony.

For India, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin finished the match with 12 scalps, including a seven-wicket haul in the home team’s second essay. On the other hand, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja returned with five wickets across the two West Indies innings.

Lauding the spin-bowling duo, the Indian captain added: “The results speak for themselves, they have been doing it for a while. There isn't much to tell them, it is about giving them the freedom to express. The experience these guys have on pitches like this is always a luxury. Both Ash and Jadeja were superb, specially Ashwin for coming out and bowling this way was class.”

The second Test between India and West Indies is due to get underway on July 20 at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain.
