According to Rohit Sharma, his Indian team defeated Australia in the T20 World Cup the next year by channeling their pent-up "anger" from the 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat.
According to him, the Men in Blue believed that the Australians had "ruined" November 19, 2023, for the whole nation, and the dressing room was aligned in its desire to eliminate them.
With some of the greatest ODI victories in the nation's history and a thrilling climax in front of a crowded Ahmedabad stadium, India was undefeated in the 2023 World Cup until the final. Australia, on the other hand, reversed its fortunes with a six-wicket victory after an uneven competition.
“The anger was always there. It was in the back of my mind. Inhone hamara 19 November kharaab kar diya, humara nahi poore desh ka (They ruined our 19 November, not just ours but the entire country’s). We should reserve something for them. We should also give them a nice gift,” Rohit Sharma said on Star Sports.
India knocked the Aussies out of the tournament in the Super-Eight stage at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. Rohit was the Player of the Match, scoring a brilliant 41-ball 92 to set up the 24-run win.
“You have these thoughts in your mind. But when you’re batting, you’re not thinking, ‘I want to knock them out of the tournament’. Yes, in the dressing room we keep talking about these things. There’s that kind of fun that yes, inko bahar karte hai, maza aayega! (let’s knock them out, it’ll be so fun),” Rohit added.
Under Rohit's leadership, India won the tournament, defeating South Africa in the Barbados final to snap an 11-year ICC title drought. Following the victory, the opening batsman retired from the format, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
