Aakash Chopra explains why KL Rahul shouldn't keep wickets in Test matches

Aakash Chopra explains why KL Rahul shouldn't keep wickets in Test matches

Chopra also opined whether India should have a new opening combination in white-ball cricket.

KL Rahul did make-shift glovework on the 2015 tour of Sri Lanka | AFP "Makeshift wicketkeepers in Tests is a no", said former India batsman-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, playing down the option of KL Rahul being potentially elevated as India's first-choice gloveman in the longest format.

Even though Rahul has kept wickets and batted in the middle-order in India's most recent limited-overs matches earlier this year, Chopra reminded everyone how hard replicating that combination in Test matches is for a non-specialist.

"You can do anything but don't (do) it. Wicketkeeping in Test cricket is a very specialised job, you have to be there for over 100 overs. You can ask Sandeep Sharma. Kiran More dropped a catch off Sandeep Sharma's bowling and he went on to score 333 runs. If you drop catches and miss stumping it can become a huge issue in Test cricket. Makeshift wicketkeepers in Tests is a no," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, replying to the query of fans.

The ex India opener, who played 10 Tests, also questioned the need to bring such an option in the picture when Rahul is struggling to return to the Test line-up and people like Wriddhiman Saha, Rishabh Pant are already there.

"He (Rahul) is a versatile batsman and can bat anywhere. (But) there is no place in the opening slot. There is no place in the middle-order also. There is that place for wicketkeeping slot only but why would you not play Wriddhiman Saha, what wrong has he done, Why will you not play Rishabh Pant. I think KL Rahul will have to wait for now."

In a different matter concerning Team India, Chopra opined whether it's time to think of a new opening combination in white-ball cricket for India, specifically whether Rahul should replace Shikhar Dhawan as vice-captain Rohit Sharma's partner.

Maybe not so much in ODIs yet, but certainly in T20Is, it is felt by many that an in-form Rahul can be a much better fit at the top for India than Dhawan ahead of the T20 World Cup.

"I don't think it is the end of Rohit- Dhawan partnership," he said. "Even in T20 cricket, Shikhar Dhawan has made him(self) relevant now. Dhawan is not far behind Rohit and Rahul now, (although) I still feel that KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma should be the first preference in T20Is but in ODIs you just can't ignore Dhawan."

"We will see a lot of Rohit and Dhawan partnership. KL Rahul anyways, settles down in the middle-order of the Indian batting line-up."
