On This Day: WATCH- MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir bring India their second World Cup triumph

It was the day when MS Dhoni's brilliance led India to their second World Cup title win, as they defeated Sri Lanka in the finals of the 2011 World Cup. The cherry on the top was that the match was played in front of the home crowd in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and chose to bat first and thanks to a sublime century by Mahela Jayawardene and contribution from Sangakkara himself, Kulasekara and Perera, took Sri Lanka to a commendable total of 274/6.

For India, Zaheer Khan (2/60) and Yuvraj (2/49) were the picks of bowlers.

India lost the in-form opener Virender Sehwag for a duck and then Sachin Tendulkar for 18 runs. Virat Kohli (35) then added 83 runs for the third wicket with Gautam Gambhir (97). MS Dhoni promoted himself to no.4 and added 119 runs with Gambhir, who fell 3 runs short of his century. Dhoni powered on and with Yuvraj (21*) then took the Indian team home.

Dhoni, who remained unbeaten on 91 with 8 fours and 2 sixes, then hit Nuwan Kulasekara for that forgettable six to make India world champions for the second time, 28 years apart. 

The Indian captain was also named the Man of the Match for his match-winning innings and Yuvraj Singh was named the Player of the Tournament.
