‘World Cup 2011 was won by entire Indian team’ - Gambhir irked by 'obsession' with Dhoni six

Gautam Gambhir feels MS Dhoni's World Cup winning six shouldn't define India's World Cup 2011 triumph.

MS Dhoni was the Player-of-the-Match in the World Cup 2011 final | GettyThe 2011 World Cup triumph will always be etched in the memories of today’s Indian cricketers and fans.  It was India’s second World Cup win after 28 years.

left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir and former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni were the heroes in the final as they scored 97 and 91* respectively while chasing Sri Lanka’s stiff target of 275. Soon after Dhoni hit the winning six off Nuwan Kulasekara, most of the Indian players went numb with some of them even shedding tears at the Wankhede.

As the country is rejoicing the 9th anniversary of World Cup victory on Thursday (April 2), Gambhir said the tournament was won by a collective effort of the team and its support staff.

Cricket fans and platforms usually use the picture, video of Dhoni’s six against Kulasekara to define India’s historic feat but it is something that the southpaw doesn’t like.

"Just a reminder @ESPNcricinfo: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX," Gambhir tweeted.

Notably, Dhoni was adjudged Player-of-the-Match in the 2011 World Cup final while Yuvraj Singh was awarded Player-of-the-Tournament for his stellar showing throughout the campaign.

With 482 runs to his name, Sachin Tendulkar was the second highest run-getter in the showpiece event whereas Zaheer Khan was the joint highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps.

Besides, the likes of Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh among others have also played a key role during the successful competition.
