SA v IND 2021-22: KL Rahul to perform the role of Test vice-captain in Rohit Sharma's absence, says report

KL Rahul will be India's vice-captain for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa. The first match of the Test series will be played from December 26 in Centurion.

"Yes, with Rohit missing, KL Rahul would be the vice-captain," the sources in the know of developments told ANI. Team India have already reached South Africa and they were in quarantine for a day after a COVID-19 test on arrival.

BCCI had named Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain for the Test series, replacing Ajinkya Rahane. But Rohit got ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury, and he is likely to be fit after the Test series for ODIs.

The selectors picked Priyank Panchal as a replacement for Rohit in the Test squad. "Team India Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma sustained a left hamstring injury during his training session here in Mumbai yesterday," the BCCI had stated in an official release.

"He has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa. Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad," it added. 

Rohit will lead the team in the ODI series after replacing Kohli as captain. The selectors had announced ODI captain while announcing the 18-member Test squad for South Africa tour. But the ODI team hasn't been announced yet.
