Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has shared his views on veteran Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the recent first ODI between India and Afghanistan on June 13 in Dharamshala. India won the game by 7 wickets, thanks to Shubman Gill’s 84* and 3 wickets each by debutants Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 102-run knock took Afghanistan to 194 runs inside 25 overs, as the match was reduced due to rain. In reply, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started well, with the veteran hitting 16 runs with 2 fours and one six.
Rohit was looking in good touch before a mix-up ended in his run-out. The incident happened in the 6th over, when Rohit, eager for a quick run, set off, while Shubman Gill responded. But then the bowler got in his way, and Gill had to say no.
However, Rohit Sharma had covered more than half of the pitch, and despite turning back and putting in a dive, Rohit was found well short of the crease and was run out.
Mohit Sharma remarked that the run-out was an unfortunate one, and neither of the openers can be outrightly blamed for the same.
"If you see the run-out, it was Rohit's call, but you will see that Shubman had also taken the start, and then Allah Ghazanfar got in his way, due to which he could not go ahead. After that, Rohit could also not go back because he had already covered more than half the pitch. It was an error beyond your control. If he had not come in the way, then Shubman could have completed the run," Mohit Sharma said on Cricbuzz.
This was the second run-out; the pair was involved in a match against Afghanistan. Back in 2024, when the two teams played a T20I in Mohali, Rohit was dismissed for a duck after a huge mix-up with Gill.
The seasoned batsman has only amassed 77 runs in four games this year at an average of 19.25 and a strike rate of 80.21. He is eager to show off his form and fitness.
After the terrible dismissal, Shubman Gill made sure the run chase did not falter. With an undefeated 84 off 66 balls, he led the pursuit and won the player of the match.
"He saw the replay; he said it's fine. Even in the last T20 match we played against Afghanistan, he got run out there as well. I mean, it was kind of a T20 game; I think the way we started, and then they pulled the game away from us. Gurbaz batted brilliantly; the way he got his century was brilliant. But I think the way we pulled back in the middle overs and the death overs was brilliant.
Honestly, I think it was a brilliant wicket to bat on. It was, as the match went on, even when we were bowling; there was a little bit of grip for the spinners. When they were bowling, the ball was coming on pretty nicely," Gill said in the post-match presentation.
On Wednesday, June 17, India and Afghanistan will play their second One-Day International (ODI) at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium.
