A terrible mix-up between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill led to the former’s run out during the first India versus Afghanistan ODI in Dharamsala on Saturday (June 13).

On the fourth ball of the 6th over of India’s chase, Rohit nudged a delivery from Allah Ghazanfar toward mid-wicket and immediately called for a single.

Gill initially took a few steps forward but then aborted the run, sending his partner back. Rohit was already well past the halfway mark, leaving him with no time to return. Rashid Khan swooped in on the ball at mid-wicket, firing it to the keeper to easily remove the bails.

Rohit was clearly disappointed as he walked off after scoring 16 off 16 balls with two fours and one six.

After the game, Gill addressed the miscommunication that cut short Rohit’s innings. The Indian captain was asked in the post-match presentation if he had spoken to his predecessor’s regarding the run-out.

In reply, Gill said: “He saw the replay, he said it's fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well.”

After Rohit’s dismissal, Shubman Gill carried on and went on to smash 84* off 66 balls to take India over the line with seven wickets and 13 deliveries to spare in a rain-curtailed 25 overs per side match.

Earlier, Rahmanullah Gurbaz wrote himself into the history books with a sensational 48-ball century at the HPCA Stadium. His 51-balll 102 propelled Afghanistan to 194/10 in 24.5 overs.
