While Bumrah took four scalps in England’s first innings to bundle out the hosts for a paltry 183, he returned with a five-wicket haul in the second essay.

Amid his heroics with the ball, Bumrah also made a vital contribution with the bat in India’s first innings, scoring 28 off 34 balls (3 fours and 1 six) to stretch the visitors’ lead to 95 runs.

Lauding Bumrah’s performance, BCCI on Saturday (August 7) posted a cheeky tweet, referring to his preparation in the nets ahead of the first Test.

It is worth mentioning here that Jasprit Bumrah was seen bowling in the nets with his batting pads on, some days ahead of the Test series opener.

BCCI quoted its own tweet from August 1 with Bumrah’s net-session picture and wrote: “28 vital runs and a second 5-wkt haul at Trent Bridge. Now you know why @Jaspritbumrah93 was so busy”.

Coming to the Test match, England posted 303 in their second innings to set a challenging target of 209 for India on Day 4.

Skipper Joe Root was the star performer with the bat for England, playing a sublime knock of 109 amid the pressure situation. It was his 21st ton in the longest format of the game and his 172-ball knock was studded with 14 fours.

In reply, the tourists were on 52/1 at the close of play, with Rohit Sharma (12*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (12*) unbeaten in the middle. KL Rahul, who was India’s top scorer in the first innings with 84, was the only man to be dismissed in the second essay for 26.
