CWC 2023: Rohit Sharma shatters 3 records in Netherlands match; leaves Sourav Ganguly, AB de Villiers behind

This encounter is being played in Bengaluru on November 12, 2023.

India won the toss and chose to bat first. Shubman Gill (51) and Rohit added 100 runs for the first wicket in 12 overs. Gill got out after hitting 4 sixes and 3 fours in his knock, but Rohit continued as he made 61 runs in 54 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

This knock brought him several records in the World Cup and international ODI cricket.

The first record he broke was of Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly had scored 465 runs in the 2003 World Cup as India captain. Rohit went past the 500-run mark in this CWC 2023 tournament in 9 innings becoming the first Indian captain to score more than 500 runs in one World Cup edition.

Before the match started, Rohit was tied with AB de Villiers for the most sixes hit by a batter in ODI cricket in a calendar year. In his knock, Rohit hit two maximums and first broke the record when he clobbered off-spinner Colin Ackermann into the long-on boundary in the seventh over.

Now Rohit has 60 sixes in 2023, in 24 innings. Meanwhile, De Villiers got 58 in 2015, which he did in 18 innings.

Going past the 500-run mark in the CWC 2023, Rohit Sharma also became the first batter in World Cup history to score more than 500 runs in consecutive CWC editions.

Apart from these, Rohit Sharma also has the World Cup records for most sixes and most fours in a World Cup edition as a captain, hitting 58 fours and 24 sixes in this CWC 2023 thus far.
