Rohit Sharma celebrates his century against Afghanistan | GettyTeam India registered an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their second World Cup 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday (October 11).

Opting to bat first, Afghanistan rode on half-centuries from Shahidi (80 off 88 balls) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62 off 69 balls) to post 272/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball for India, claiming four wickets by conceding 39 runs in his 10 overs.

Chasing the target, Indian captain Rohit Sharma took the Afghanistan bowling attack to the cleaners, smashing a century in just 63 balls – the fastest by an Indian batter in World Cup history.

Rohit added 156 runs for the opening wicket with Ishan Kishan (47) and followed it with a 49-run partnership with Virat Kohli.

Sharma was dismissed by Rashid Khan in the 26th over but not before he slammed 131 off 84 balls, including 16 fours and 5 sixes. With his knock, he also became the most century maker (7 tons) in World Cup history.

In the end, Kohli (55*) and Shreyas Iyer (25*) completed the formalities and took the hosts over the line with 15 overs to spare.

For their stunning display with the bat, Rohit Sharma received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on social media platform X.
