The ICC and BCCI organized a Captains’ Day press event on Wednesday on the eve of the start of the ICC World Cup tournament in Ahmedabad on October 5. England and New Zealand will clash in the first encounter of the tournament.
All the captains of the 10 participating teams fielded questions from the journalists and one question asked to India skipper Rohit Sharma led to him being blunt in his reply.
A journalist asked Rohit Sharma a question regarding the supposed controversial decision to crown England as champions despite a tie in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's.
The match and the subsequent super-over ended in a tie, but England was named winners based on the boundary count in one of the most controversial decisions.
With the journalist asking Rohit's opinion about whether joint-winners should have been declared, the opening batter responded that it's not his job to decide.
He said: "Woh Mera Kaam Nahin Hai sir. Woh Ghoshit Karna Hamaara Kaam nahin hai." (It is not my job to decide that, sir. It is not my job to announce that)”
Meanwhile, Babar Azam was seen translating the question, which was asked in Hindi/Urdu to Jos Buttler, who was sitting beside him. The Pakistan captain also suppressed a laugh in reaction to Rohit Sharma’s answer to the query.
The champions and runners-up will rekindle their rivalry on October 5th at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to open the 2023 World Cup.
