India skipper Rohit Sharma has moved up in the latest ICC Men’s Test Rankings for batters after his 10th Test century in the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica last week.
Rohit’s young opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal also made his maiden appearance on the updated list after a stunning debut.
India began their WTC 2023-25 campaign in an emphatic style, registering a victory by an innings and 141 runs in the opening Test over West Indies. Rohit and Jaiswal played a key role in the win with superb centuries.
Rohit slammed 103 and advanced three places to re-enter the top 10. He holds the 10th position, ahead of compatriot Rishabh Pant (11th) and Virat Kohli (14th) as the highest ranked Indian batter.
On the other hand, Jaiswal scored a magnificent 171 from 387 deliveries in what was his maiden Test innings for the country. As a result, the 21-year-old deservedly won the Player-of-the-Match award and entered the rankings chart, occupying the 73rd spot.
Rohit and Jaiswal weren't the only Indian players to make gains in the updated Test rankings. Veteran spinner R Ashwin extended his lead at the top of the bowling rankings following his stunning exploits in Dominica.
Ashwin’s 12-wicket haul saw him improve a total of 24 rating points, meaning the ace off-spinner now holds a 56-point lead ahead of Australia captain Pat Cummins in second place on the updated rankings for Test bowlers.
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja played an important supporting role to Ashwin during the first Test, picking up five wickets across the two innings. Consequently, Jadeja jumped three places to seventh overall on the bowler rankings.
Having won the Dominica Test, India have taken an unbeaten 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second Test will be held at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain from July 20.
