Joe Root's catch to dismiss Travis Head | GettyEngland’s Joe Root left everyone stunned with a remarkable catch to dismiss Australia batter Travis Head on Day 4 of the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s on Saturday (July 1).

During the 68th over of Australia’s second innings, Stuart Broad bowled a well-directed short delivery and Head played it awkwardly, ending up giving away a thick leading edge. Root, who was stationed at short leg, dived to his left to complete a stunning one-handed catch.

With this grab, Root went past Alastair Cook’s tally of most catches (175) as a fielder for England in the longest format. He achieved this feat in his 132nd Test appearances.

Moreover, Root joined the Indian legend Rahul Dravid in an elite list of players with most catches as a fielder in Test cricket.

Having taken 210 catches from 164 Tests, Dravid holds the record for most catches by an outfield player in Test cricket. Root now features sixth in the list with 176 catches to his name in the traditional format.

Coming to the Lord’s Test, Australia found themselves in a spot of bother having started the fourth day in a dominant position at 130/2.

The visitors slipped to 222/5 at Lunch and eventually got bowled out for 279 to set a stiff target of 370 runs for England.

Having won the first Test at Edgbaston by two wickets, Australia are leading the five-match Ashes series 1-0.
