Australia are in driver’s seat in the ongoing second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s. After taking a healthy first-innings lead of 91 runs, the visitors were 130 for 2 in 45.4 overs in their second innings when rain stopped play on Day 3.
During the third day’s play, England played their tricks but it didn’t work against the determined Australian side. Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow attempted to sledge Steve Smith but it didn’t bother Australia’s No. 4 batter.
Smith has a very unique way of leaving the cricket balls. In fact, his exaggerated actions while leaving deliveries often become meme material.
On Friday (June 30), Smith left a delivery from James Anderson during the 41st over of Australia’s second innings. Looking at his shuffle back after leaving the ball, Bairstow told Smith, “I reckon you’re the next on Strictly Australia”, referring to a dance show.
Smith didn't seem to know about it and retorted by saying: “What’s that?”
Explaining his sledge, Bairstow said: “Bit of dancing for you.”
Bairstow’s comment didn’t bother Smith at all as the latter ended the conversation by saying: “Wouldn’t have thought so.”
Earlier on Day 3, England's last six wickets fell for just 47 runs and got bowled out for 325 in reply to Australia's first innings score of 416. Mitchell Starc claimed three wickets for the tourists while Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head picked up two scalps each.
At the close of play, Australia extended their lead to 221 runs in the second innings, with Usman Khawaja (58*) and Steve Smith (6*) unbeaten in the middle.
