Legendary Australia batter Ricky Ponting is widely regarded as one of the shrewd cricketing brains in the world. During his playing days, Ponting led Australia with tremendous success and even today he displays his astute brilliance every now and then.
On Sunday (January 9), Ponting predicted England spinner Jack Leach’s dismissal from the commentary box during the fourth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The Test match, which ended in a dramatic final day draw, saw Steve Smith removing Leach with two overs to go in the day, courtesy a catch in the slips by David Warner.
Interestingly, Ponting was on-air during Leach's dismissal and had just spoken about Smith's plan to get the better of England tail-ender.
"Can he just get something to explode out of the footmark? That's what he's trying to do, he's getting it wide outside the off stump, catch a footmark... About there! About there!" said Ponting on 7Cricket.
It is not the first time that Ricky Ponting is grabbing headlines for predicting a dismissal. He had pointed out a weakness of Cameron Green on-air before Ben Stokes succeeded in cleaning him up during the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval
"Very distinct change of tactics for the new batsman Cameron Green. They will get a lot fuller and straighter, they will target his stumps. Have a look at how he sets up in his stance. He sets up with a very open front foot. That is generally a sign of someone who is very worried about getting LBW, doesn't want to get their front foot too far across into the line of his stumps," Ponting had said while commentating.
Coming to the fourth Ashes Test, England managed to eke out a draw at SCG to avoid a clean sweep in the series. The pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson stuck at the crease for the last two overs of the day to pull off a hard-fought draw.
