ENG v WI 2020: "Had a few restless nights", Kemar Roach admits feeling anxious before 200th wicket

Roach became the ninth West Indies bowler in the game's history to take 200 Test wickets on Day 2 in Manchester.

Kemar Roach | AFP Kemar Roach became only the ninth West Indies bowler in the history of the game to take 200 Test wickets on Day 2 of the ongoing series-decider in Manchester against England, the first from the Caribbean to do so in 26 years after Sir Curtly Ambrose.

Definitely proud of his achievement. However, the 32-year-old also admitted he felt anxious about the milestone leading upto this Test match.

"I guess I had that landmark on my mind a little bit too much, I had a few restless nights," Roach, who had figures of 4/72 in the first innings, told the BBC

"It's good to get past that barrier now and see how many more I can get. 300 would be great. I'll work hard to get there and we'll see how many I can go past 300," he added.

The moment he dismissed Chris Woakes to reach the landmark it was also a sign of resurgence for Roach, who started off as a tearaway quick, but went down with several injuries following a car accident in Barbados in 2014. The pacer struggled on his comeback to the park and was left out by the selectors for about 18 months.

Having lost some pace, Roach went about resurrecting his career, compensating lack of speed with greater nous for swing bowling and more efficient use of angles at the crease.

He was recalled for the last Test trip to the UK in 2017 and hasn't looked back since, taking 79 wickets in 22 Tests at an average of 22.87.

Despite Roach's wonderful spell, England posted 369 all out in the first innings, with Rory Burns (57), Ollie Pope (91), Jos Buttler (67) and Stuart Broad (62) making fine half-centuries.

In response, the visitors struggled their way to 137/6 by stumps on Saturday.
