Jos Buttler felt reassured of his Test match game with a fine half-century in the first innings of the series-decider against the West Indies in Manchester. 

But the wicketkeeper batsman did admit he was feeling the pressure of a poor run with the bat, coming into this match with an average of only 18 from his last seven games in the traditional whites.

"Yes, naturally but I think time in the middle gives you confidence and obviously I hadn’t been doing that," he told Sky Sports, after making a stress-lifting 67 in England's 369 all out. 

"But I think it’s more about doing a job for your team which I’m very aware of and if you are not quite performing as well as you want, you realise you’re not doing your job as well as you should be for your team."

"I was definitely feeling the pressure. I’ve played long enough now to understand when you’re under pressure and it’s on your shoulders and how to deal with it," Buttler added. 

Buttler's partnership with Ollie Pope (91) for the fifth wicket helped England take its score near 300, before the tail, in particular a resurgent Stuart Broad (62), wagged to take the team to a daunting total. The visitors finished the day at 137/6, still trailing by 232 runs. 

Buttler said he has realised he is at his best when finding a nice balance between attack and defense, and not just going after the bowling, as people expect him to do because of his propensity to play such knocks in the white-ball game. 

"The only time I’ve had success at Test level is when I’ve trusted my defence. Lots of people expect me to play a certain way because of the way I play in one-day cricket but I’ve never seen Test cricket in that way," said the 29-year-old, whose knock should give him more time to finally crack the code in the toughest format.
