Ashes 2019: Steve Smith says "Test captaincy is certainly not on my radar at the moment"

Smith cannot lead the Aussies till March 2020 due to his ban conditions for ball tampering saga in Cape Town.

Steve Smith and Australia captain Tim Paine | GettySteve Smith returned to the Tests after a year due to the ball-tampering saga in Cape Town made a fantastic comeback in first Ashes Test at Edgbaston. The right-hander went on to get stunning 144 and 142 in first and second innings respectively.

While talking to cricket.com.au about leading the Test side, Smith made it clear that Test captaincy is not on his mind as he said, “It (the Test captaincy) is certainly not on my radar at the moment. It’s just about going out there and doing my job as a batsman and scoring runs.

Even though Smith is back to playing after serving the ban, he is not allowed to lead the side till March 2020. However, the former Australian skipper made it clear that he will not shy away from helping current skipper Tim Paine on the field.

When asked about that (helping Paine), the 30-year-old from Sydney said, “Of course, I’m experienced now and able to help in any way that I can. (Paine) knows I’m there to help him and give him some suggestions and things like that as much as I can. If I see something I’ll always go to him and try and help for the betterment of the team.

The Aussies have posted a solid target of 398 for the rivals England. It will be interesting to see how the English batsmen bat at their fortress Edgbaston where they are unbeaten in Tests since 2008.
