Thailand women's cricketer Natthakan Chantam was heartbroken after the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday (November 27) confirmed the cancellation of the remainder of the 2022 Women's World Cup qualifying tournament.

There has been the introduction of travel restrictions from a number of African countries, including the host country Zimbabwe, after the breakout of a new COVID-19 variant, Omicron in southern Africa.

The ICC decided after Saturday's game between the West Indies and Sri Lanka was called off due to a member of the Sri Lankan support staff testing positive for COVID-19.

Chantam posted a picture of mobiles of Thai players who had kept the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022 logo as their lock screen.

The dreams were shattered after ICC's announcement to call off the tournament, which was to decide the final three qualifiers for the World Cup next year in New Zealand.

The three teams will now be decided according to the team rankings as mentioned in the tournament playing conditions, which makes way for Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the West Indies.

Thailand were at the top of their group's points table with three wins in four matches. They had defeated USA, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe while losing only to Pakistan in Group B.
