IPL 2022: Punjab Kings may not retain any player ahead of the mega auction, says report

The existing eight franchises have been asked to submit their retention list by November 30.

Punjab Kings | BCCI/IPLPunjab Kings (PBKS) might not retain any of their players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auctions, a report claimed.

Having failed to qualify for the playoffs after the mega auction in 2018, the Punjab-based franchise is looking to make a fresh start again and head into the bidding war with a full purse worth INR 90 crore.

As per the retention rules, the existing eight franchises can retain a maximum of 4 players (up to three Indians or utmost two overseas players) from their IPL 2021 squads while the two new teams –Ahmedabad and Lucknow – will be able to acquire three players from the player pool before the mega auction.

Earlier, it was reported that skipper KL Rahul will part ways with PBKS and a few franchises have shown interest in buying him at IPL 2022 mega auction.

Rahul has been leading PBKS since 2020 and has failed to take the side into the playoffs. He had replaced R Ashwin as Punjab’s captain ahead of IPL 2020 after the veteran spinner was traded to Delhi Capitals (DC).

While Rahul has been doing wonders with the bat, Punjab Kings have failed to gel as a unit and have finished outside the top four under his leadership.

According to a report in The Telegraph India, Punjab Kings may retain uncapped players like Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh but they haven’t made their mind yet.

“Since the franchise would only need to shell out INR 4 crore if they retain an uncapped player, one of Arshdeep and Bishnoi could be persisted with," the report said.

Notably, the existing eight franchises have been asked to submit their retention list by November 30.
