T20 World Cup 2024: Starc, Maxwell troubled by delayed flights; Cummins’ luggage lost en route to Barbados

Australia will open their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Oman on June 5.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell linked up with the squad late as they briefly went back home to Australia after featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs.

While Cummins and Starc went on to play the final for SRH and KKR respectively, Maxwell's RCB were knocked out in the Eliminator.

According to a report published in cricket.com.au, Cummins spent two days in transit between Sydney and the Caribbean and his wife Becky revealed that some of Australian Test captain’s luggage was lost along the way. It also reported that Cummins later recovered the lost items.

Starc and Maxwell had also flown back home after the IPL. The duo was troubled by delayed flights as they had to spend a night in Los Angeles followed by a night in Miami en route to Barbados.

All these developments came to the fore after all-rounder Marcus Stoinis missed a warm-up fixture against the West Indies in Trinidad last week as his cricket kit failed to arrive on the island.

The logistical troubles were felt during the practice match, where Australia had only nine players to choose from. Despite taking part in the IPL playoffs, Travis Head (SRH) and Cameron Green (RCB) were able to join the Australian team in Barbados on time.

Chief selector and former captain George Bailey and head coach Andrew McDonald were forced to take the field to fill up for the missing players against Namibia on May 28.

The absence of regular players meant that the 49-year-old batting coach Brad Hodge also had to step on the field alongside the 46-year-old fielding coach Andre Borovec.
