The cricketing world has been abuzz with discussions about Virat Kohli’s batting position in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.
Kohli’s performance was nothing short of remarkable in the recently held IPL 2024 season. Playing for RCB, he opened the batting and finished the tournament as the leading run-getter with 741 runs from 15 innings at a strike rate of 154.69, including one hundred and five half-centuries.
Indian fans had their first glimpse of the team during their solitary warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday (June 1).
While Virat Kohli missed the warm-up fixture after arriving in New York just a day earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal's absence from the match has sparked speculation about whether he will be dropped from the playing XI to make way for the former to open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, former Australia skipper Aaron Finch has weighed in on India's opening combination, saying that Jaiswal is a ‘gun’ batter and the Men in Blue should make the best use of him at the top of the order.
Finch also expressed confidence in Kohli’s ability to bat long while coming in at No. 3.
"Say it is a 180-style tournament, then India have got a very good side for it. (Kohli) can bat long into the innings and still strike at 150," said Finch on The Grade Cricketer podcast.
"Jaiswal is a gun, he tees off with Rohit Sharma up top, they will go as hard as they can. Once Virat then gets in, the other one continues to go really hard because everyone knows that he is going to bat long," he added.
India are placed in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, along with Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. The inaugural champions will begin their campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5.
