T20 World Cup 2022: “Could have got us five runs,” Bangladesh’s Nurul Hasan accuses Virat Kohli of fake fielding

The incident that Nurul Hasan was referring to happened in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s innings.

Virat Kohli relaying the throw at the non-striker's end | ScreengrabBangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan has accused India’s star batter Virat Kohli of "fake fielding" during the T20 World Cup 2022 clash at the Adelaide Oval on November 2.

Chasing the revised target of 151 in 16 overs, Bangladesh fell short by five runs (DLS method). While skipper Shakib Al Hasan gracefully accepted the defeat after the game, Nurul pointed out that the wet outfield didn’t help their cause when the game resumed after rain interruption and they were robbed of five penalty runs as the fake fielding went unnoticed by on-field umpires.

"Definitely, the wet outfield did have an impact when we restarted the game. But there was also a fake throw which could have got us five runs but we didn't even get that," Nurul said in Bengali at the mixed zone, indirectly alleging that umpires Chris Brown and Marais Erasmus ignored the incident.

The incident that Nurul Hasan was referring to happened in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s innings.

In a video doing rounds on social media, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh can be seen throwing the ball from the deep and Kohli, who was stationed at point, pretended as if he was relaying it at the non-striker's end.

The two Bangladesh batters who were involved in the running, Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto, weren’t looking at Kohli and, thus, they were not distracted or deceived.

The ICC playing conditions rule 41.5, which pertains to unfair play, prohibits fielding team from "deliberate, distraction, deception or obstruction of the batter".

If the umpire finds any one has violated the rule, he can call it a dead ball and award five penalty runs.

While Nurul accused Kohli of fake fielding, he didn't keep the "distraction and deception" part of the rule in his mind and might be sanctioned for criticising the match officials.
