In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 match against Bangladesh on Wednesday (November 2), India batter Virat Kohli surpassed Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene's record for the most runs in T20 World Cup history.

Kohli has broken Jayawardene's record of 1016 runs, set in 2014, with 1065 runs to his name in the mega event. He achieved this feat on the same ground where he has scored more than 900 runs and 4 centuries across formats, the Adelaide Oval.

Following the game on Wednesday, Jayawardene praised the 33-year-old and added that while the form is temporary, the class stays forever.

"Records are meant to be broken. Someone was always going to break my record, and it's you, Virat. Brilliant mate, congratulations. You've always been a warrior. Form is temporary but class is permanent. Well done, buddy," he said on Instagram.

On Wednesday, after being put in to bat first, India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma early. But Kohli put on a 67-run partnership with KL Rahul, who too smashed a commanding half-century off 32 balls.

At the end of the first innings, the Men in Blue posted a total of 184/6 with the former Indian captain producing a Player of the Match performance, 64* off mere 44 balls, continuing his love affair with the Adelaide Oval. With this knock, he also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs by an Indian in Australia.

The second inning was curtailed due to rain. The chasing side eventually fell short of the target by just 5 runs despite Litton Das’ fiery knock (60 off just 27 balls).

The Men in Blue will face Zimbabwe in their last Super 12 encounter on Sunday (November 06).
