T20 World Cup 2022: WATCH - "Do I have the ability to convince umpires?" Shakib argues with journalist after India clash

Bangladesh were given the revised target of 151 in 16 overs when the game resumed after rain.

Shakib Al Hasan talks with the umpires | GettyBangladesh suffered a heartbreaking five-run defeat (DLS method) at the hands of India at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday (November 2).

Chasing 185 to win, the Tigers got off to a blazing start as Litton Das took the Indian bowling attack to the cleaners. Thanks to his 21-ball half-century in the powerplay, Bangladesh reached 66/0 after 7 overs before the rain entered and the overs had to be curtailed.

While Bangladesh were 17 runs ahead of the DLS par score when the rain arrived, they got the revised target of 151 in 16 overs when the game resumed.

Soon after the rain interruption, Litton Das got run out for 60 off 27 balls while the Indian bowlers held their nerves to restrict Bangladesh to 145/6.

After the game, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan addressed a press conference, where he was left surprised after one of the journalists asked if Bangladesh happily accepted the revised target given to them.

Here’s how the conversation unfolded:

"Bad luck Shakib, did you not try and play after the rain? What was the discussion that was going through?" the journalist asked initially.

"Did we have any option?" Shakib replied.

"No option, but did you try and convince them?” the journalist continued.

“Convince whom?" Shakib replied.

"Umpires and, of course, Rohit Sharma," the journalist said.

"Do I have the ability to convince the umpires?" Shakib said.

“Accha. Then you were discussing the rivers of Bangladesh? What were you talking to the umpires?" the journalist asked.

"Now you are asking the right questions. Umpires called us and told us about the revised target, the playing rules, the number of overs we would play," Shakib said.

"And you all accepted it?" the journalist asked.

"Yes (in a surprised tone)," Shakib added.

“Beautiful, thank you,” the journalist concluded.

For India, Arshdeep Singh (2-38) and Hardik Pandya (2-28) picked two wickets each and defended 31 runs in the last two overs.

Shakib believes Bangladesh should have achieved the target after Litton Das’ blitz put them in the driver’s seat.

"Rain isn't in our hands, so we had to play after accepting it. We needed around 84 runs in the last nine overs, and in such conditions, most teams would get the target. Unfortunately, we were very close, but not close enough," he stated.

With four points from as many games, Bangladesh are still in contention to qualify for the playoffs. They will take on Pakistan in their last group match at the Adelaide Oval on November 6.
