NZ v IND 2020: Shaw doubtful for second Test after skipping practice due to swollen foot

The Indian opener made scores of just 16 & 14 in India's ten-wicket defeat in Wellington.

Prithvi Shaw | GettyPrithvi Shaw skipped India's practise session on Thursday (February 27) because of swelling on his left foot to put in doubt his participation for the second and final Test of the series against New Zealand in Christchurch, beginning February 29.

As per a report in PTI, the young Indian opener will now undergo a blood test to ascertain the reason of the swelling; whether or not Shaw plays at the Hagley Oval will be decided at Friday's practice session where in case the medical report is favourable, a final call will be taken on him as per his comfort level while batting in the nets.

If Shaw is not fit, India will hand over a debut cap to the prodigiously talented Shubman Gill, who might be asked to open alongside Mayank Agarwal. The option to promote Hanuma Vihari at the top of the order, as done previously on the tour to Australia, would also be considered.

Head coach Ravi Shastri was seen taking keen interest in Gill's net session on Thursday as he also gave the youngster some technical inputs.

Shaw was dismissed cheaply in both innings of the first Test in Wellington in India's embarrassing ten-wicket defeat.

The 20-year-old Mumbai right-hand batsman's technique against the moving ball has been under scanner but skipper Virat Kohli had backed him to continue in the playing XI.
