After going unsold in the ILT20 auction recently, India’s former ace off-spinner R Ashwin has committed to playing the entire BBL 15 season for the Sydney Thunder team.
He originally signed a shorter deal that would have just covered a few league games and the playoffs, but he has now extended it to stay available for the duration of the competition. The dates of the BBL 2025 are December 14–January 25.
Ashwin was dissatisfied with the outcome of the ILT20 auction, having entered it with the highest base price of USD 120,000 among the registered players.
He was unsold in Wednesday's opening round of the auction, meaning his intended spell in the ILT20 did not come to pass. He quickly removed his name from the remaining rounds because he didn't want to play in the league for such little money.
"That's the price I wanted as a bare minimum, and I'm happy not to play at this stage of my career if my value isn't met. I was about to pull out a few days before the auction because of the Thunder deal, but since I had already committed to the ILT20 and said that I would enter the auction, I honored my word. However, I did not agree to lowering my base price," Ashwin told Cricbuzz.
On Thursday, he also confirmed to Cricbuzz that he has committed to the Sydney Thunder for the entire season.
"I have signed up with Sydney Thunder for the entire season," he said.
