The first Test between India and the West Indies began on October 2, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and chose to bat first.

Johann Layne and Khary Pierre made their Test debuts for West Indies, while India went in with three spinners and two pacers, with Nitish Kumar Reddy for company.

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were all over the West Indies batters as openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul (0) and John Campbell (8) were removed early.

There was little resistance from the West Indies batters, though captain Chase made 24 and Shai Hope made 26 runs. Justin Greaves, the all-rounder, stood tall and scored 32 runs with four fours and managed to keep Bumrah and Siraj away for a while.

However, Bumrah proved to be too good for Greaves, as on the final ball of the 39th over, the Indian pacer fired a searing yorker towards Greaves. The ball started outside off and targeted his off-stump. Greaves was slow to bring his bat down, and the ball uprooted his off-stump, much to his surprise.

Then, on the first ball of his next over, Bumrah sent down another yorker-ish length ball, this time to debutant Johann Layne, and the right-hander tried to play a drive and had his middle and off-stump uprooted.

West Indies was bowled out for 162 runs with Mohammed Siraj taking 4/40, while Jasprit Bumrah took 3/43. Kuldeep Yadav took 2/25 and Washington Sundar took one scalp as well.
