India’s star batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday (May 12). This move comes just days after Rohit Sharma called time on his Test career with immediate effect.

Having retired from T20Is last year, the legendary duo will now focus solely on the ODI format. However, their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains a mystery.

Speaking to India Today, batting great Sunil Gavaskar opined that he doesn’t see Kohli and Rohit featuring in the marquee event, which is still two years away.

The duo recently played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph. Their performance was brilliant in the last ODI World Cup as well, where India reached the final without losing a match.

Gavaskar lauded both the players but wondered if they will be able to continue the high-intensity brand of cricket that they have been playing over the past three years.

"They have been massive performers in this format of the game. Again, the selection committee will probably be looking at the 2027 World Cup. They will be looking at 'will they be able to be in the team for the 2027 World Cup? Will they be able to make the kind of contributions they have been making?'. That will be the thought process of the selection committee. If the selection committee thinks 'yes, they can', then both of them will be there for that," Gavaskar said.

In terms of age, Kohli and Rohit will be 38 and 40 respectively by the time next 50-over World Cup begins.

When asked to share his personal opinion, Gavaskar remarked: "No, I don't think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can't drop them."

India’s next ODI series is scheduled against Bangladesh in August. Dhaka and Chattogram will host the three matches.
