BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Devajit Saikia heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday (May 7).

The 38-year-old confirmed his retirement from Test cricket through a social media post. His decision came days before the selection of India’s Test squad for the upcoming England tour.

"Rohit Sharma’s impact on Indian cricket transcends records and statistics. He brought a sense of calm and assurance to the team – both as a player and as a captain," said Binny in a statement.

"His ability to stay composed under pressure and to consistently put the team’s needs above his own made him a truly special player and leader. He leaves behind not just a remarkable playing record, but a culture of discipline and selflessness that will inspire future generations.”

Having already retired from T20 Internationals after the World Cup last year, Rohit Sharma will now only be seen in the ODI format for India.

Rohit’s red-ball future came under severe scrutiny after he managed just 31 runs in five innings at an abysmal average of 6.20 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 -- the lowest by a touring captain on Australian soil. He also stepped aside from the fifth Test at SCG due to poor form.

Rohit ended his Test career with 4,301 runs coming from 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He led India in 24 Tests, winning 12 and losing nine games.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said: “Rohit Sharma has been a towering figure in India’s Test journey – a captain who placed the team above all else, and a player who personified the values of discipline, humility, and excellence. Indian cricket is proud not just of his achievements, but of the dignity and integrity with which he conducted himself throughout his career. The BCCI expresses its deepest gratitude to him for his extraordinary service in whites. His legacy is etched permanently in the history of Indian cricket.”
