On October 27, 2022, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that the centrally contracted Indian women’s cricketers will get the same amount of match fees as their male counterparts going forward.
Shah in a series of tweets said that the Indian cricket board is implementing a pay equity policy for its contracted women players.
"I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket," Shah tweeted.
This meant Women's cricketers will also get INR 15 Lakhs per Test match, INR 6 lakhs per ODI match, and INR 3 lakhs per T20I match they play, which is the same as the men's cricketers.
"The BCCI Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind," he added.
Reacting to this news, multiple Indian women cricketers praised the BCCI for their decision and called it huge news for women players in the country.
India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur tweeted: “Truly a red letter day for Women’s Cricket in India with pay parity announced for women and men. Thank you @BCCI and @JayShah”
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was also elated at the news and posted: “What amazing news for Women's cricket in India”
Apart from these two, ace batter Jemimah Rodrigues tweeted: “How good is this for Women's Cricket in India”
