“But if you don’t score a fifty in 14 matches, questions will be raised,” Kapil Dev critiques Rohit and Virat's form

The performances of seasoned batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be watched closely as India gets prepared to take on England in a multi-format bilateral series.

In the IPL 2022, Kohli only managed 2 half-centuries while recording 3 golden ducks. On the other hand, Rohit failed to reach a single half-century throughout the 2022 season making his batting woes even more alarming.

Due to the fact that both players were rested for the T20I series against South Africa at home, it is quite uncertain how they would perform in the crucial one-off Test match beginning against England on July 1 at Edgbaston.

India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev expressed concern about Rohit's performance and argued that when you fail to reach 50 in 14 games, questions will inevitably be raised.

“The player (Rohit) is brilliant, no question about that. But if you don’t score a fifty in 14 matches, questions will be raised, be it Gary Sobers, Don Bradman, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, or Viv Richards. Only Rohit can answer that what’s happening. Is it too much (cricket) or has he stopped enjoying it?" said Kapil on the Youtube channel Uncut.

“Players like Rohit and Virat (Kohli) should enjoy the game. How they feel is very important (for their performances)," he added.

Additionally, Rohit and Virat's decision to skip the India-South Africa series was questioned by Kapil.

“You have to score runs (to get back in form). You cannot go too far based on reputation alone. Eventually, the opportunities will get dried up. How many chances would you need after 14 games? Can’t understand why they’re rested. If dropped, where they will get a chance to play then? It’s quite difficult to see how they play now," concluded Kapil.

The England tour will kick off with the rescheduled Test at Edgbaston, followed by three T20Is and three ODIs.
