Veteran batter Murali Vijay made his return to competitive cricket on Friday (June 24) in Tirunelveli, with Ruby Trichy Warriors in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. He, however, struggled in his comeback game and was dismissed for a shaky 8 from 13 balls.

During his brief stint in the middle, Vijay did not come off as convincing and he was run out trying to get a sharp single.

In addition to not appearing for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket or the TNPL last year, Vijay last represented Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match in Dubai in September 2020. Additionally, he had not participated in the local TNCA League.

In December 2019, he finished his Ranji Trophy career as a player for Tamil Nadu. Vijay played in his final Test for India in Perth against Australia in 2018.

The 38-year-old seemed pleased to be back in action and stated before the current TNPL season that he wanted to enjoy the game.

“I want to play as long as possible. Just took a personal break," he said recently ahead of the TNPL.

“I have a young family and wanted to take care of them. I’m enjoying my cricket now and I’m feeling fit, hopefully, I can do my bit for my team and TNPL," he added.

Murali Vijay is playing under the captaincy of the seasoned left-arm spinner Rahil Shah at Trichy Warriors.

The TNPL 2022, which began on Thursday, will continue until July 31.
