The BCCI is looking at options to replace Virat Kohli as the new Indian team Test captain, after the ace batter quit from his role on January 15, 2022. Kohli captained India in Tests from 2014/15-2022.
He led India to 40 victories in 68 Test matches including keeping India unbeaten at home, winning 11 Test series. India also won Test series overseas in Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Australia, including the maiden Test series win in 2018-19 down under. He also led India to the ICC WTC 2021 final.
Now after he stepped down as the India Test captain, many expect Rohit Sharma to take over from him. However, reports have suggested that KL Rahul is also in line to become the next India Test captain.
Anushka Sharma pens down an emotional post for Virat Kohli as he gives up Test captaincy
Rohit was officially named as the team's vice-captain in the longest format of the game ahead of the South Africa tour but it was Rahul who entered the series as Virat Kohli's deputy as Rohit failed to make it to the squad due to an injury.
"Rohit Sharma is the front runner to be the test captain but sources say selectors could have a fresh discussion on India’s new Test captain. KL Rahul being the other name. As per the process, a designated vice-captain would become the next captain but selectors could debate all formats captaincy being a burden for one individual and go for a separate captain in tests," a source told Times Now.
Age might also be considered as 34-year-old Rohit might not be seen as a long-term replacement, while Rahul, who is 29, is much suited to remain captain for a long time.
One of Rahul and Rohit is now expected to lead the Indian team as the full-time Test captain in February-March when the team will take on Sri Lanka.
