Third season of Global Canada T20 league to be played in Malaysia

The third season, which was supposed to be played in Canada in June 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic across the world.

Malaysian Cricket has been chosen to play host to the Global T20 Canada between June –July 2021. The Global T20, owned and managed by Bombay Sports Co. Ltd., is the only professional league in North America.

Together with Cricket Canada and Bombay Sports, Malaysian Cricket is elated to play host and assist to manage this “Return to Play” season, here at Kinrara Oval, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Season 3 of GT20 Canada will have 22 matches played over 18 days and will be a first of its kind experience for the Malaysian players and match officials at their home ground.

The Global T20 Canada League season 3 will feature 6 teams. Each of the teams will have a total of 10 international cricketers from full and associate nations including 2 world-renowned marque players, 3 Canadian National team players, 3 emerging Canadian Cricketers, and 1 Malaysian National Player.

Winnipeg Hawks | GT20 CanadaThe first editions of GT20 Canada featured the cream of the franchise T20 league players like Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, David Warner, Steve Smith, Brendon McCullum, and Thisara Perera.

Despite the excitement around the third season of the GT20 Canada, the organizers are well aware of mitigating the spread of the COVID 19, which shall be the priority at all times. The whole tournament will be played in a bio-secure bubble and strictly adhere to the standard operating procedures.

The Malaysian Cricket is in the midst of obtaining the relevant approvals from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the government agencies in Malaysia and are confident of their support, which will certainly help to develop cricket as a sport to be reckoned with in Malaysia as well as globally.

“Cricketers and fans of cricket in Canada would be disappointed to know that the third edition of our world-class tournament - GT20 Canada, cannot be held in Canada this year, due to the ongoing pandemic and the Canadian health guidelines.

We understand and support our health authorities. We are very positive and look forward to hosting the tournament in Canada once we are past this pandemic. I am however very excited to share with all the Canadians and Cricket lovers across the world, that our good friends at the Malaysian Cricket Association stepped up to help us host season 3 of GT20 Canada in Malaysia with the necessary approvals. We are looking forward to a very successful and exciting Third edition of GT20 Canada in Malaysia,Cricket Canada President, Rashpal Bajwa said while sharing his sentiments on GT20 being held outside Canada.

Furthermore, Gurmeet Singh, Director of Bombay Sports Co. Ltd shared his excitement and said, “We are delighted to be able to have this season of GT20 in Malaysia. The health and safety of everyone involved in the tournament is our priority and the protocols put in place will reflect the same. I would like to thank Cricket Canada and the Malaysian Cricket Association for the efforts they have put in, to make this happen. And we, along with the millions of cricket fans are hoping for some exciting, nail-biting cricket.”

Season 3 of GT20 will certainly receive an electrifying welcome from cricket fans all over the world who have been left dry of their sport for over a year.
