Former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh, while talking about the split-captaincy in the Indian team, said that there is no need for India to employ split captaincy as Virat Kohli has been performing across all formats.

The split-captaincy debate in Indian cricket has been in talks for some time now. Many fans including some pundits feel that Rohit Sharma, who has guided Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, should be one the leading Team India in white-ball format. 

While many believe Ajinkya Rahane, who led Team India to a historic Test series victory in Australia down under recently should be leading the Indian Test side and Virat Kohli should continue captaining the side in limited-overs format.

However, India’s triumph over England in the all-three formats under the leadership of Virat Kohli have silenced voices calling for split captaincy. 

While talking about the same, former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh said that there is no need for India to employ split captaincy as Virat Kohli has been performing across all formats. 

"Split captaincy is needed when your captain is not performing but he (Kohli) is the only player to average more than 50 in all formats. If he isn’t performing in one format you can take the leadership pressure off him and give it to someone else," Sarandeep Singh told PTI. 

Virat Kohli however has been unable to win any IPL trophy as captain for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). 

Singh while talking about the same said that just because the former hasn’t won’t any IPL trophy you can’t remove him from India captaincy. 

"Just because he has not won an IPL you can’t remove him from India captaincy. He is also the fittest player and captain. Rohit is there to lead the side in his absence but there is no reason to replace Virat,” he said. 

Virat Kohli’s RCB will lock horns against Rohit Sharma’s MI in the season opener of IPL 2021 at Chennai on 9th April. With no IPL trophies in his cabinet Virat Kohli would look to bag one in this year.
