Former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs entered the record books by hitting six sixes in an over for the first time in international cricket, on March 16, 2007. He recalled the memory on its 14th anniversary on Instagram and Twitter.
The 7th match of ICC World Cup 2007 between South Africa and the Netherlands started later than the scheduled time due to wet ground. The match was thus reduced to 40 overs per side and that meant the South Africans, who batted first, would like to do extra damage to make up for the overs lost.
WI v SL 2021: Herschelle Gibbs and Yuvraj Singh welcome Kieron Pollard to six 6s club
Gibbs, batting at No. 4, came out with the same intention and leg-spinner Daan van Bunge was the one who suffered the most for it. In the 30th over of the innings, Gibbs hit van Bunge for 6 sixes in the over and recorded the event in history.
Only two cricketers, Yuvraj Singh in 2007 and Kieron Pollard in 2021, have been able to emulate him at the international level.
ESPNCricInfo posted a video of the entire over on its Twitter handle and Gibbs quoted the video saying, “Adrenaline rush”
