Afghanistan is all set to play their first-ever Test match against Australia later this year, as both Cricket Australia and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) have finalized the one-off Test match in December 2020 amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday (August 27), ACB’s interim chief executive Nazim Zar Abdulrahimzai has confirmed that Afghanistan will travel to Australia to play the lone Test match from December 7 to 11 in Perth.

According to the ICC's Future Tours Programme, Australia was slated to host Afghanistan in November for a one-off Test match from November 21 to 25 at the Perth Stadium but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – which led to numerous bilateral engagements to adjust dates or postponed.

It is being said that Australia would look for a Day/Night affair in Perth, but the ACB requested the CA for a normal Test since Afghanistan hasn’t yet played under the lights with the pink ball, and board CEO was confident that Australia board would agree to their request.

Abdulrahimzai stated: “We are going to play the one-off Test series against Australia in December. We have requested them to play a normal Test match instead of the day-night Test match, as we have not played a D/N Test earlier. Our camp will be based in UAE ahead of the Australia tour, where we are expected to play a practice game before the lone Test.”

Noteworthy, the upcoming Test in Australia will be Afghanistan's fifth game in the longest format since getting the Full-Membership at the International Cricket Board in 2017.

However, the one-off Australia-Afghanistan Test will not be the part of the ICC's World Test Championship since it is limited to the top nine teams, not Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan.
