On This Day: India whitewashes Australia 4-0 at home in Tests; becomes the first team to do so in 43 years

It was the first time in 43 years, Australia suffered a 0-4 series whitewash.

Ricky Ponting had retired and Michael Clarke had taken over from Punter, as Australia tried to do a repeat of 2004 when Australia won only their second Test series in India.

However, by the time the series ended on this day, March 24, in 2013, Australia had lost the Test series 4-0, having been whitewashed for the first time in 43 years. For many fans this was the redemption for the Indian team for their 4-0 drubbing down under in 2011.

To celebrate the amazing series, win by Team India over the Australian team in 2013, we take a look back at the four-Test matches and how India slammed the Kangaroos.


First Test- India wins by 8 wickets, Chennai

MS Dhoni won the Man of the Match for his 224 Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. They made 380 in the first innings with Michael Clarke making 130 and debutant Moises Henriques making 68 runs. R Ashwin picked 7/102 for India.  In reply, India made 572 with Sachin Tendulkar making 81, Virat Kohli making 107 and then MS Dhoni slamming 224- the first-ever double ton by an Indian wicketkeeper. James Pattinson picked 5/96.

In second innings, Australia managed just 241 with Henriques making his second fifty on debut (81). Ashwin picked 5/95, making it 12 in the match for him. Set 50 runs to win, India reached the target losing two wickets with Sachin Tendulkar hitting two sixes to take India to the victory by 8 wickets.

MS Dhoni won the Man of the Match for his historic double ton.


Second Test- India wins by an innings and 135 runs, Hyderabad

Cheteshwar Pujara won the Man of the Match for his 204

The second Test was played in Hyderabad and Australia batted first after winning the toss again. Clarke (91) and Wade (62) starred with the bat as they made 237/9d. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/53) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/33) were the best bowlers from India.

India replied with 503 as Cheteshwar Pujara made 204 and M Vijay slammed 167 runs. Glenn Maxwell picked 4/127 for Australia. Trailing by 266 runs, Australia crumbled for 131 with Ed Cowan making 44 and R Ashwin picking 5/63 and Jadeja taking 3/33.

India won the second Test by an innings and 135 runs and Cheteshwar Pujara was named Man of the Match for his double ton.


Third Test- India wins by 6 wickets, Mohali

Shikhar Dhawan won the Man of the Match for his 187 on debutThe third Test match was played at the PCA stadium in Mohali and saw Australia win the toss for the third time and batted again. Steve Smith (92), David Warner (71) and Ed Cowan (86) helped Australia to 408. Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets each.

India replied with 499 thanks to a blistering 187 by debutant Shikhar Dhawan and 153 by M Vijay and their opening partnership of 289 runs. Virat Kohli made 67* as well, as Peter Siddle picked 5/71 for Australia. In the second innings, Phil Hughes made 69, while Brad Haddin and Mitchell Starc contributed as well, taking Australia to 223.

India was set 133 runs to win and they lost 4 wickets in getting to the target. Shikhar Dhawan, who made a century on debut, was named the Man of the Match.


Fourth Test- India wins by 6 wickets, Delhi

Ravindra Jadeja won the Man of the Match for his fifer in DelhiFor the fourth time in a row, Australia won the toss and chose to bat first in Delhi. Peter Siddle’s 51 and contributions from Phil Hughes (41) and Steve Smith (46) took Australia to 262. R Ashwin picked 5/57 for India. MS Dhoni’s team replied with 272 runs with openers Pujara and Vijay making fifties and Jadeja, Tendulkar making thirties each. Nathan Lyon picked 7/94.

Siddle scored his second half-century in the match as Australia made 164 runs in the second innings with Jadeja picking 5/58. India was set 155 runs for the win, which was achieved as Pujara made 82*with 11 fours and Kohli made 41. India won the match by 6 wickets, making 158/4 and pocketed the series 4-0.

It was the first time in 43 years, Australia suffered a 0-4 series whitewash.
