Yuvraj Singh is widely regarded as one of the best limited-overs batsmen to ever play the game. The left-hander made a name for himself due to his ability to hit big sixes and scoring quick hundreds. He also gained the reputation of being a match-winner for India.

This was on display in its full glory during the 2011 World Cup when the Punjab left-hander shined with both the bat and the ball and walked away with the Player of the Tournament award.

His best innings in the tournament came against the West Indies in a group stage match on this day in 2011, March 20.

India had lost both Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir cheaply. This is when Yuvraj and Kohli came together and stitched a 122-run partnership. Yuvraj carried on even after Kohli got out.

The Chennai heat started to get to him and Yuvraj vomited many times in the middle and was visibly ill. In an interview for Aaj Tak in 2014, Yuvraj recalled,” I first thought it was because of the Chennai heat. I always wanted a World Cup hundred, which never happened because I had batted at 6. I prayed to God that whatever happens, even if I die afterward, let India win the World Cup.”

He ended up scoring 113 runs in 123 balls with the help of 10 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 91.86. He then came good with the ball as well, dismissing Devon Thomas and the dangerous Andre Russell. He was also named the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
