Vikram Rathour excited to have Prithvi Shaw back in the mix post-suspension

Shaw had been banned for eight months after failing to pass a dope test.

Hailing him as a "phenomenal player", India's batting coach Vikram Rathour said it would be good to have Prithvi Shaw back in the reckoning having endured an eight-month back-dated period of suspension after failing a dope Test.

The opener last played for India in his debut series in October against West Indies and has since faced injury issues as well as the controversial ban.

Shaw will now find it even more difficult to just walk into the playing XI as India has seen Mayank Agarwal and newly promoted Rohit Sharma cement their places at the top, with the prodigious Shubman Gill available as the back-up opener.

"Getting back into the team will be the selectors' decision. As far as team management is concerned, I think he's a phenomenal player. So let's see how it goes, how he shapes up after the suspension," Rathour told reporters on Saturday (November 16) after India won the first Test against Bangladesh in Indore by an innings and 130 runs in Indore.

Agarwal especially has taken to Test match cricket like a fish to water since his debut in Melbourne last year. He has now scored two double hundreds in his first eight Tests. And what Rathour finds even more admirable is the willingness to learn each day irrespective of the runs.

"Rather than us (support staff) pushing them, they push us. Somebody like Mayank, after scoring so many runs, is still coming and asking what better he can do, what are the areas he can improve upon. That's a great character to have. And that's not one guy, everyone in the team is like that," he said.

For Shaw, the upcoming Ranji Trophy and India A's tour of New Zealand in January are now doubly important as he looks to also once again leapfrog the likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran and Priyank Panchal in the pecking order.

"I'm sure he's working hard and getting ready to come back," Rathour said. "And how he gets back will depend on a lot of other factors."
