The International Cricket Council (ICC) may form a panel soon to resolve the Asia Cup 2025 trophy dispute, Cricbuzz reported on Friday (November 7).
India clinched the Men’s Asia Cup T20 by defeating Pakistan in the final played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 28.
However, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side were denied the trophy after they refused to collect it from ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also a minister in Pakistan’s government and posted anti-India sentiments on social media throughout the tournament.
After Indian players refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, he left the stadium with the trophy and has not returned it back to India so far.
Furious with India’s stand, Naqvi took the silverware and medals in his custody. After BCCI’s protest, the PCB boss said that if India wants the trophy and medals, a member of their team can collect them from his ACC office in Dubai.
During the ICC meeting on Friday, the Asia Cup trophy issue was reportedly raised by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia
According to Cricbuzz, the atmosphere in the meeting was cordial rather than serious among the members of the ICC Board when the topic was raised.
“The BCCI pointed out that Naqvi, in the capacity of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, was holding on to the trophy, which rightfully belonged to India, the Indian team and the BCCI. He (Devajit Saikia) is understood to have pointed out that the trophy should be handed over to India immediately,” the report stated.
If needed, the apex body may form a panel to address the matter. “The BCCI’s stand has been that the trophy should be handed over to India soon. It is a well-known fact that the silverware remains locked up in the ACC office in Dubai, with orders from Naqvi that it should not be moved without his authorization," the report further said.
