The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (October 28) shared second medical update on Shreyas Iyer’s recovery from an injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney last Saturday.

Iyer had suffered internal bleeding from the impact while taking a catch to dismiss Australia's wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. The middle-order batter was immediately rushed to the hospital after scans ascertained a “laceration injury to the spleen.”

“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia,” BCCI said in a statement.

“The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has revealed that Shreyas Iyer is recovering remarkably well from a spleen injury, exceeding medical expectations. He has been moved out of the ICU and is reportedly in good spirits.

“Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than what the doctor expected. I’m in regular touch with Dr Rizwan (Khan, Indian team doctor who stayed back with Iyer to assist with his treatment at the Sydney hospital). Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier,” Saikia told TOI.

“The doctors are very satisfied with his progress. He has started his normal functioning (routine chores). His injury was very severe, but he has recovered and is out of danger, which is why he was shifted from the ICU to his room in the hospital yesterday,” Saikia added.

The board secretary further stated that Shreyas didn’t undergo surgery but “a different procedure.”

As per the report, the “different procedure” was needed stop the internal bleeding on immediate basis.

“The usual hospital stay for this injury is 7–10 days. So, Iyer is likely to be in the hospital for that long,” a source tracking developments told TOI.

The board is reportedly arranging for Shreyas Iyer’s sister, Shresta Iyer, to fly to Sydney soon. “The BCCI has done its best to help Shreyas out. The BCCI’s doctor (Rizwan) is totally focused on Iyer’s treatment and recovery there. Shreyas has been put up in the best hospital in Sydney (St Vincent’s Hospital),” Saikia said.

Addressing the media on the eve of the first T20I against Australia in Canberra, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav shared a positive update on Shreyas Iyer.

“We spoke to him. At least on the first day, when we got to know that he had an injury, I called him first. Then I got to know that he didn't have a phone. Then I called my physio, Kamlesh. He told me that he is stable. On the first day, you cannot be sure of anything.

"We have been talking to him for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable. And the doctor is also there with him. But he will be under supervision for the next few days. So it's looking good. But he has been replying, so that is good," Suryakumar told reporters.
