The recent IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 8, 2025, that was being played at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala, has been called off mid-way during PBKS innings due to floodlight failure.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer had won the toss and chose to bat first. PBKS openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh started hammering the DC bowling from the get-go. The duo added 122/1 in 10.1 overs with Arya getting out for 70 in 34 balls with 5 fours and 6 sixes, while Singh had made 50* in 28 balls with 7 fours.
When Arya got out and Iyer walked out to bat, the floodlights went off in the ground. Later, the crowd was asked to evacuate for safety reasons, and the players were asked to do the same.
According to an official BCCI statement, the abandonment was due to a "significant technical failure" at the HPCA Stadium.
“The Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals match (Match#58) in Tata IPL was forced to be abandoned due to a significant technical failure at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala. Due to a power outage in the area, one of the light towers at the HPCA Stadium malfunctioned. BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to the in-stadium attendees,” the official statement read.
Both teams and spectators were evacuated from the HPCA Stadium. At the time of writing, Cricbuzz has learnt that the players and coaches had boarded buses to the team hotel, shortly after their families had been ferried out around 10 minutes earlier.
In various videos on social media, the crowd in the stadium was being asked to calmly evacuate the facility as the operation staff guided them out of the venue. Even IPL chairman Arun Dhumal was seen directing the crowd to leave the stadium.
