Senior India batter Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday (May 7). He confirmed his decision through an Instagram story.
Rohit’s decision comes days before the announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming five-Test tour of England, starting on June 20 in Leeds.
“Hello, everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit wrote on social media.
“Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” he added.
Following Rohit’s retirement, wishes came pouring in for the veteran opener for his excellent career.
Young batter Shubman Gill also paid a fitting tribute to Rohit Sharma, saying that the country is grateful for his contribution to the game.
Gill also thanked Rohit for all the lessons, praising him as one of the best captains he’s played under.
“India is grateful for what you've done in tests as a player and a captain. You've been an absolute inspiration to me and everyone that has played with or against you. There are things I've learnt from you that I'm going to remember forever. Happy retirement to @rohitsharma45 one of the best captains that I've played under. Thank you Cap!,” wrote Gill on his Instagram story.
India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah also congratulated Rohit Sharma on a commendable Test career.
“Congratulations on a commendable Test career, it was an honour sharing the dressing room with you. Your legacy in whites will continue to inspire everyone,” Bumrah wrote on his Instagram post for Rohit.
Rohit Sharma ended his Test career with 4,301 runs coming from 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He led India in 24 Tests, winning 12 and losing nine games.
Having already stepped away from T20Is after leading India to a World Cup title last year, Rohit will now focus solely on leading the national side in ODIs.
